Jim Staley has written a Excel™
worksheet approach to assist Ring Master bowl designers to better understand how
the angles work and how to modify them to achieve the desired results.
This is not an adaptation of an existing program but an easy to use, easy
to understand worksheet that not only allows you to see the results of your
changes from the basic shapes that he has already drawn out, but to print out
the worksheets to take them to your shop to build your creation.
Broken into basic shapes, such as
Standard Straight Sided pieces, Simple Vase, Barrel, Horn, Chalice and
Long-necked Bowl, as well as a free form area to enable you to let your
imagination go wild! And you do not have to be a
computer guru to understand the worksheet.

Here is a sample starting point to design the Barrel
type project, and
by simply changing the dimensions of a ring, the drawing automatically
will up date, plus it even will give you the Precision Angle
measurements and settings. |

New version of Protoshaper
Protoshaper Version 3.0 has been released. The only program written expressly for designing Ring Master® vessels is better than ever. The author has attempted to incorporate all of the feedback that he has received. With this version, the sketch appears adjacent to the input so that it is easier to follow the design. Another added feature is the ability to design vessels using double spaces on the index plate. For those who want to carve their vessel, this is a significant opportunity. Another big change is the addition of eight new worksheets. Four new worksheets that allow designs by entering angles are provided. Many folks like to design using angles as input. That is because it is easier to conserve material by working with the critical angle as much as possible. In addition to a worksheet that allows any angle to be input, worksheets that work with either two or three angles are provided. These worksheets provide the easiest way to design vessels that are curved after sanding and use the least number of blanks possible. Another new worksheet allows one to design straight-sided bowls with steeper sides than the standard Ring Master® bowl. For those who make vessels by gluing two components together, a new worksheet allows two modules to be designed on the same page. Another worksheet allows one to design a curved bowl from one blank. Finally, for those who want to design large vessels, a new spreadsheet allows the input of 26 layers. The total of 24 worksheets provide many choices for designing any vessel that is possible to be made from Ring Master® rings. Either copy one of the designs provided, “tweak” the design to fit your needs, or start afresh. The only prerequisite to using Protoshaper is that you have Microsoft Excel™.
